Opening Candlelight Processional

by H. J. Gauntlett, arranged by David Willcocks

“Once in Royal David’s City” is adapted from a poem by Cecil Frances Alexander, an Irish hymnwriter and poet who wrote primarily for children. This poem comes from her 1848 collection Hymns for Little Children, which was written to explain the concepts of the Apostle’s Creed to children in terms they could more easily understand. Alexander was a well-known activist in her time and donated the proceeds from this poetry collection to a local school for the deaf, which she had founded with her sister using money from her early publications.
