How People are Coming Together (Safely) in Song
The Washington Chorus already knows the incredible joys of coming together to sing in harmony with one another. While we are currently unable to be in the same room together, we are still able to sing from our homes and share videos with each other. Those who live in apartment buildings are able to sing outside their windows together and share their act of solidarity with us virtually.
Here are some of our favorite examples:
The first videos of people singing together came from Italy. People from all over the country (Siena, Naples, Benevento, Salerno) posted videos singing all types of songs from their balconies, from regional tunes such as “Viva la nostra Siena,” to pop songs, to the Italian national anthem. Viva Italia!
A community in Bamburg, Germany (a northern Bavarian town) showed their support to Italy by singing a traditional Italian protest song together, Bella Ciao, which has come to represent Italian strength in difficult situations.
In Dallas, TX, apartment dwellers came together to sing Bill Withers’ touching song, “Lean on Me.” The talented vocalist Danzel Barber led the heartfelt performance.
In Rogers Park in Chicago, IL, residents of an apartment complex rocked out to Bon Jovi’s “Living on a Prayer” together!
The Washington Chorus has been doing its part to continue to share the joy of choral music in these difficult times! TWC TV is weekly livestreamed show on Thursdays at 5pm EST that features special guests, quizzes, in-home performances and archival recording releases from The Washington Chorus vault! TWC has also continued Monday rehearsals virtually amongst their singers, featuring Artistic Director Christopher Bell and other guests discussing musicality, vocal exercises, diction coaching, and more! We are so fortunate to have such a loving and caring community of singers that are willing to work together through these current challenges.
