Donald J Borut has more than 40 years experience in municipal government and organizational leadership in the public interest sector. He served as the Executive Director of the National League of Cities from 1990  - 2012. Prior to his NLC appointment, he was Deputy Executive Director of the International City Management Association (ICMA).

A graduate of Oberlin College, with a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Michigan, he received the Neil Staebler Distinguished Service Award from the Ford School of Public Policy, University of Michigan  and the National Public Service Award from the American Society for Public Administration and the National Academy of Public Administration.

He has served on numerous advisory boards, editorial boards, and other committees in the public interest sector, including the Boards of the State and Local Legal Center, the Downtown DC Business Improvement District, the National Academy of Public Administration, The Center for State and Local Government Excellence, and Citiscope Global News. He currently serves  on a number non-profit boards, including Levine Music, The National Theatre, The Washington Chorus and Think Kids.
