Curious about what to expect? The Washington Chorus has answered all your questions and more.

What is being performed?

“Tomorrow!” is the first live performance of Damien Geter's “Cantata for a More Hopeful Tomorrow,” a cantata and short film of the same title produced in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This new choral experience aims to blend past with present as you’ll hear The Washington Chorus perform the cantata live and in-person, accompanied by DC native cellist Élise Sharp and Grammy award-winning soprano Nicole Joseph. At the same time, you’ll be encouraged to look to the past as Emmy award-winner Bob Berg's innovative film is projected on the walls around you.

The entire experience of "Tomorrow!" will surround you in expressions of the emotions from the past two years and engage you to reflect on and share your own experiences through interactive artmaking. At the end of the experience, you’ll be invited to add your own thoughts to our reflection wall.

So there’s a movie being played?

Yes! TWC produced a short film (approximately 30 minutes) in 2020, and we’ve partnered with internationally acclaimed projections designer Camilla Tassi to project it on the walls around the space while the full chorus performs the unforgettable music live in-person!

It’s like if you went to see a showing of Star Wars except John Williams’ iconic soundtrack was played by an orchestra sitting right in front of you!

How does that challenge what’s expected of a traditional choral concert?

To start, you’re encouraged to move around the space during the concert! While seating is available and the experience is fully accessible, there is far more to do at "Tomorrow!" than just sit and listen to the music.

You’ll have approximately an hour in the space, and you’re encouraged to spend your time wandering through and interacting with the music, film, and art exhibit throughout the building.

There’s an art exhibit?

Yes! Piotr Szyhalski's powerful art installation, COVID-19: Labor Camp Report, will be available for viewing during the concert. Szyhalski’s collection is a series of posters tracing the emotional turmoil caused by COVID-19.

You can buy the book featuring the entire exhibit here.

Interactive artmaking? I can make my own art?

Please do! Audience members are encouraged, but not required, to create their own piece of art that conveys how their life was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are varying activities available that ensure that artists of all skill levels can participate and create something they’re proud of.

Where can I learn more about the artists?
